Established in 1974 under Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) Act 1993 to take care of Islamic affairs in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur which was previously placed under the Selangor state government. MAIWP after that was also responsible for managing the affairs of Muslims in Labuan and Putrajaya after both were announced as Federal Territories.
